Birdsboro Reservoir is part of the Hay Creek Watershed.

The area offers a variety of recreation fun and is located along the Hay Creek and old (and closed) SR82.

Besides my favorites, photography and nature watching, fishing, hiking, biking, horseback riding, even a rock climbing wall are some of the activities.

Dragonfly - Middle Creek Wildlife Reserve

The annual Wildlife Art Festival weekend at Middle Creek Wildlife Reserve was the first weekend in August.

This is the 2nd best show at Middle Creek, next to the all-natural Snow Geese migration.

Since many artists don't allow photographing their art, I concentrate on the outdoor show instead.

The hummingbirds and butterflies were very active in the man-made garden feeding on sugar water and a butterfly tree, respectively.

Angelica Creek Grasshopper

Max and I set out on a windy July morning before the oppressive heat.

Every time I visit Angelica Creek Park, I find varying flora and fauna. A little early in the day and season for butterflies, but the grasshoppers were swarming everywhere.

I did notice that the section of the Schuylkill River Trail path that runs under SR10 down to the river was closed. This does not come as a surprise since the area is so isolated and could be deemed unsafe.

Best paint job - Classic Car Show

St. John's Church in Gibraltar, PA hosted a great car show showing about 150 classic cars from all era's.

A colorful and diverse collection of cars were brought out by their owners.

The tree-lined grounds, I thought were the perfect setting to view cars. Another scorching day in July, the trees kept the visitors cooler and encouraged longer visitation.

The owners probably had mixed emotions, enjoying the shade to sit in, but not the clean-up that comes with overhanging trees.

A pig roast, which never disappoints, and numerous home made treats made the food choices plentiful and tasty.

Their goal was 150 cars, which I believe they easily achieved.

Reading Museum Gardens

Once again, the Reading Museum, namely "Trudy's Garden", was in bloom with color.

Several gardens settings on both sides of the Wyomissing Creek make this a great place for a morning stroll.

You won't be alone for exercisers and dog walkers are a common site as well as couples enjoying the romantic settings.

Air Show Penn Valley Airport

On a hot July day, the air was filled with the sights and sounds of classic propeller planes.

What a great show the little Penn Valley Airport in Selinsgrove, PA hosted.

Great planes, period encampments, delicious food and customer friendly conditions make this a must see if they choose to do it again.

Water toting golf carts were canvassing the vast infield selling water for $1 a bottle. With temps near 100, these "angels of mercy" were so appreciated.

H. O. Smith Botanical Gardens

H. O. Smith Botanical Gardens on the north side of Penn State campus is not far from the Beaver Stadium.

I accidentally discovered this oasis while looking for the Dickinson School of Law building. I spotted the new and unique looking building at a football game so drove up to get a closer look.

The center piece Overlook Pavilion offers dramatic views of the countryside and is a good starting point for meandering down the paths.

Beautiful themed gardens are separated by pathways, fountains and open areas.

With Phase 1 progressing wonderfully, the upcoming projects should be just as impressive making this a must see on return visits to the campus.

French Creek - stream

Hot, humid and bug-infested were the conditions for a morning walk along the stream leading from Scott's Run to Hopewell Lake.

High contract between the shadowed green leaves, ferns, reflections and the bright sunlit subjects made exposing shots difficult.

Despite harsh photography and diverse trail conditions, the walk along the stream has numerous breath-taking scenes.

Semi-Modern Hay Baling

While driving through Lancaster County I grabbed this shot of some Amish men baling hay, the semi-modern way.

Manually stacking 50+ pound bales on a flatbed wagon being pulled by a steel wheeled tractor is better than a cutting with a sickle and raking, but it still looks like grueling work.

Longwood Gardens

In addition to the many themed events and variations in the Conservatory, the seasonal outside gardens are exquisite.

Sea Isle City - Bay Sunset

Sea Isle City, NJ offers something for everyone. Great beaches, good restaurants, fun activities and night life.

Parts of the barrier island are so narrow that the road is all that separates the bay from the dunes and beach.

Fiddler crabs - Corson's Inlet State Park

Bonding with nature during morning magic hour at Corson's Inlet State Park at the New Jersey shore.

Armies of these tiny crabs, with big attitudes, scurry off the trail and into their burrows as they feel the vibrations of me approaching. I thought I could trick them so I stood still in the middle of their colony and within a few they resumed crabby behavior. Now crawling within inches of my shoes, I was able to capture a lot of behavior photo's.

Corson's Inlet State Park is a quiet and picturesque place at the north end of Strathmere. Long, nearly private beaches run along the inlet and wrap around the peninsula to the ocean.

Taj Mahal - Atlantic City, NJ

While briefly visiting Sea Isle City, I took an early drive up the coast to drive through Atlantic City and the shore towns along the way.

I hadn't been to A.C. in over 20 years so I didn't really know what to expect. I would describe it as the ultimate juxtaposition of extremes. The modern, sleek casinos versus the old just-getting-by streets a mere two blocks away from the beach.

Political opinion could be argued that casinos enrich the community with a tax stream, but it's hard to see this in 30-40 years of practice. However, there was a lot of construction projects, like a new casino being finished, street enhancements, and clearing of many lots a block from the casinos (not sure what was on these lots previously?).

Ultimately, I do want to go back to A.C. to walk the board walk and visit some of the casinos and capture the street scenes.

Philadelphia Pro Bike Race

A chilly morning and mild temperatures indicate that a fast pace race was in order.

I walked up and down the Ben Franklin Parkway from Logan Circle to Kelly Drive by the Art Museum to capture the various backgrounds.

I like this one mile stretch of the 15 mile course for it offers great low angle shots and things to do when the racers are elsewhere on the course.

Located here are the vendor and food booths, feed zone, the TD Waterhouse sponsor area with free cow bell and backpack giveaways.

Philadelphia Bourse (First Friday)

The First Friday of June was a great time to check out Old City Philadelphia. We took a stroll through the Independence Mall area and visited the classic Bourse building.

Along 2nd and 3rd streets, the art galleries and shops stay open late inviting strollers to come in and see their skills. Restaurants, most with cafe's, are abundant along Market St.

Lot parking is pricey, $20+, so feeding a meter kiosk at $1.50 per hour is actually way cheaper.

Cape May, NJ is a really neat place that combines old fashioned Victorian era charm with a beach town.

A hundred years ago Cape May was the summer retreat for the rich and famous, while today it still has an upscale feel.

Many Victorian homes were converted into bed and breakfasts over time and there actually appears to be more B&B rooms than hotels and motels.

An active fishing fleet still works the seas bringing in fresh seafood for the Jersey shore. Cape May is famous for it's delicious restaurants.

Shore excursions to the Diamond Beach, the Lighthouse, and several mansions offer fun options.

World Financial Center - NYC

This is a really cool part of Manhattan. The World Financial Center, located in Battery Park City, is adjacent to "Ground Zero" and the "Winter Garden" actually over looks the construction of the new buildings.

Shopping, indoor and outdoor dining, great views of the Hudson River and Jersey City skyline make this an attractive place to live and visit.

The Lancaster Art Walk is a great opportunity to explore the numerous galleries that are making Lancaster an art destination.

Two Art Walks per year, on May 7&8, 2011 and a 2nd coming October 8&9, 2011.

The artsy area is loaded with great galleries and shops. A few really cool antique and vintage shops also compliment the galleries.

The new Marriott Hotel at Penn Square is an excellent architectural example of juxtaposition, fitting the old and new in harmony.

They offered a creative way to enjoy over 60 unique sculptures on their beautiful grounds.

May is a great time to visit Jenkins Arboretum due to Azalea and Rhododendron blooms.

The park is free and always enjoyable.

Wyomissing Creek Photowalk

Max and I headed out on a mild spring afternoon to catch the rich new colors nature has offered.

I parked at the Old Mill Rd parking area and we headed south crossing the creek on wooden bridges until arriving at the stone spring house, a distance of a half mile.

A few dramatic pink and white trees were along this route as well as a yellow and a red tulip garden, which were past prime.

We back tracked on the other side of the creek then crossed Old Mill Rd to follow the down stream about 7/10 of a mile the pond and old stone house.

The pond had spectacular reflections in all directions. Max was feeling a bit tired so it was time to head out. I took a few more reflections and stream shots on the way out.

Early and chilly Sunday morning in Philadelphia. My friend, John, and I tried to capture the sunrise at the Art Museum, but the light was little off for the dramatic effects we were hoping for.

After the sun came up, we headed to Ben Franklin Bridge for a photo walk. The beginning of the pedestrian ramp is near 5th and Arch. (Kiosk parking close by on Arch street, $1/hr at 8:30AM)

The bridge is well over a mile long, end-to-end and it has pedestrian walkways on both sides of the bridge. The north side walk seems little used for the best views of the city are from the south side.

It was a thrilling experience. This bridge is just huge! It's over 100 feet above the river, the cables are giant and the support towers are over 350 feet tall. Two hours flew by effortlessly.

Birdsboro Reservoir (First Spring)

Late afternoon at the Hay Creek Watershed was the remedy for a severe case of Spring fever. Sunny and temp around 75 amounts to perfect weather.

It felt great after a relatively inactive winter for Max and I to get out and take a photo walk. Two hours and over two miles in the park flew by as we saw all the usual sights.

The shoulders along old SR82 were cut short so very little activity there, at least above the surface.

The discharge from Birdsboro Reservoir was charging in it's path along the road. Nice sunlit shots were abundant.

Breezes at the reservoir added texture to the surface and abstracted the reflections.

The canal was deep and clear. A few frogs and a snake made an appearance as well an underwater salamander.

The Hay Creek was rushing full force and it was apparent it has receded from it's highest water for the shore lines were matted down from the past heavy and moving waters.

On our way out we passed about 20 people walking in to enjoy the weather and sights of the park.

Middle Creek Wildlife Preserve (Sunrise Snow Geese)

A 4:30AM wake-up was necessary to make the 6:15 sunrise at the Middle Creek Preserve. I drove for 50 minutes, then walked another 1/2 mile up Willow Point trail to the pavilion to join a bunch of fellow snow goose lovers in anticipation of the early show.

The uncanny body clock of these geese set them to flight en mass shortly before the day break. As if a practice flight, they did a large sweeping lap around the skies then back down to the lake.

Another large flock did the same routine, but within a half hour these massive flocks started flying off the lake. An estimated 50,000 geese randomly, yet systematically, flew away from us all over the next 1.5 hours.

Some human-tolerant snow geese paddled to the shore, waddled up the field then began to feed amongst their human admirers. Great portrait opportunities for all of us as well as the ability to observe their feeding behavior.

I finally pulled myself away and headed to the car to warm up my trigger hand and look for some new and different subject matter.

The tour road opened March 1, which has some neat scenery, but little access to the snow geese because almost all lands around the lake are restricted access.

The highlight of the tour road was red-winged blackbirds. Posing in bushes along the road and singing their mating call to lure in a suitor seemed to be their sole focus.

Tired and hungry and home by 10:30 with a very fulfilling photo shoot behind me, I had the afternoon to relax and relive my morning via 600 images and 4 videos. Great day!

Tundra Swans - Middle Creek Wildlife Reserve

Middle Creek Wildlife Management Reserve is a popular stopover for the Snow Geese and Tundra Swans on their way to their northern breeding grounds.

This year they arrived about Feb 17 and they will likely stay about 3-4 weeks. Initially, the lake was still over half frozen but the mild weather thawed the lake completely.

The ideal time(s) of day are pre-dawn and in the afternoon's. At dawn you get to experience the explosion of the flock as they leave the lake towards the fields. In the afternoon, they start arriving for their overnight rest.

Berks County has a lot of nice farm scenes.

I pass this location regularly at all different times of day and seasons, and I'm pretty sure that I have enough shots to make a four seasons project.

Mifflinburg (Union County) back roads

To some, Mifflinburg, in Union Co, PA is merely a speed bump en-route to Penn State. It wasn't that long ago when there was even a McDonald's or a Sheetz. The town itself is old, yet well preserved, with old buildings and traditional stores on the main street.

My favorite thing about it is the back roads where Amish buggies are common sight and picturesque farms and farmland can be seen in every direction.

This shot was captured right after sunrise in the morning magic hour. A cold night left a bit of frost on the remaining pumpkins.

Spontaneously choosing roads was fun and challenging. With subjects and lighting changing by the minute, this area definitely deserves future visits and different back road explorations.

New York City - Open House New York

This was the 8th year that New York City has a weekend program, called Open House New York (OHNY), allowing access to private and public buildings for architecturally and design enthusiasts.

Historically it runs on Columbus Day Weekend. This year I toured a LEED Certified apartment on 85th Street. The Lucida apartment we visited cost about $5,000,000 or about $1M per bedroom.

The Chrysler Building lobby, normally off limits, was open for the day too. Still heavily guarded, but at least tolerant to the art deco enthusiasts it attracted.

Penn Ave, West Reading, PA (Fall Walk)

This photo was taken at Curious Consignments where their inventory can change daily so they provide a never ending supply of interesting things to purchase.

Gring's Mill Rec Area

Gring's Mill was the starting point for a walk on the Union Canal Trail along the Tulpehocken Creek.

Union Canal Trail (part of the Schuylkill Trail System) offers scenic views of Gring's Mill, Red Bridge (covered bridge), Berks Heritage Center, plus other sites depending on how far you venture.

Summer highlights at Gring's Mill include annual festivals and the Summer Concert Series held at the outdoor amphitheater on Sunday evenings, Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend. Gring's Mill also hosts the Holiday Lights Program during the month of December.

Rental space is available for large groups, with numerous recreational activities.

Reading Railroad Heritage Museum

Following the memorable Hamburg Hamburger Festival, I passed the Reading Railroad Heritage Museum which was advertising later hours and yard tours for $5.

The museum has knowledgeable volunteers leading yard tours on the weekends; five on Saturdays and three on Sundays.

They have ambitious engine and train car restoration projects, plus the whole site design and landscaping.

I have a passive interest in trains, but the volunteers were so into the history, massive machines, and railroad culture that it was easy to share their enthusiasm about trains.

Sunflower Tunnel - Reading Public Museum

In August I learned that the Reading Public Museum created a sunflower tunnel.

It's the first year of a project where they arrange and layer varying heights of sunflower species in parallel rows. When they mature the tall ones will lean over forming a tunnel.

The bees and finches were loving the new food source too.

Of course, a visit to the museum wouldn't be complete without a stroll along the stream through their arboretum.

Mockingbird - Middle Creek Wildlife Reserve

Every August, I make a point to visit the Middle Creek Wildlife Art Show and reserve.

The visitor's center has colorful gardens full of insects, butterflies and hummingbirds.

Below the visitor center is a large wildflower field loaded with great photo subject matter too. Also close is a large lily pad covered pond with numerous species of dragonfly's and frogs.

This mockingbird buzzed me numerous times as I was taking macros in the wildflower fields. I guess she thought I was interfering with her collecting.

Hay Creek - Tiger Swallowtail

A near-perfect weather morning was all the encouragement I needed to get out for a photo walk with Max.

A little too late for sunrise and morning mist, but just right for the morning magic hour lighting.

Max and I walked the mile to Birdsboro Reservoir and lapped it. Still waters with vivid reflections were at every angle.

After the reservoir we headed down to the little dam on Hay Creek for some potential stream subject matter.

Joe-pye weeds (as pictured) align Hay Creek Road which is a favorite of butterflies and insects, but in the morning the road is shaded by the hills so not the best for photography. However, along the canal and by the stream were lots of sun lit joe-pyes loaded with butterflies.

Two hours flew by with just a little over 2 miles covered.

Teasel - Angelica Creek Park

Angelica Creek Park is small and subtle, but it packs in so much natural diversity.

Wildflowers, insects, birds are thriving here. Trails parallel the stream the length of the park and offer great subject matter for nature lovers.
Max and I visited on a mild temp (rare this summer) and breezy evening making macro photography especially challenging, but the ample lighting allowed for faster shutter speeds helping me get many good shots anyway.
We walked up and down both sides of the creek covering about a half mile in our short visit ending about 7:00PM.

TD Bike Race - Philadelphia International Cycling Championship

TD Bike Race - Philadelphia International Cycling Championship has been a must see event for the past 26 years.

Good weather prevailed once again as it has for every year that I've attended.

A hot 90 degrees took a toll on the bikers during the grueling 156 mile 10 lap course. Lady cyclists compete on the same course for a shorter 57 mile race.

The vendor area is fun for you get to sample the latest nutrition bars, health drinks and other snacks. Lots of cycling gear is for sale as well as cycling culture.

Memorial Day Service (Sunbury, PA)

Memorial Day is the day we remember the veterans, both living and passed.

The organizer's and participants of the Sunbury parade and service made this the best I've ever attended.

While the entertaining Sunbury Band sat in the blazing heat, the parade was marching well over a mile to the cemetery for the final memorial service at the Sunbury Cemetery at 4th and Spruce St.

The period fashioned people symbolized the extent of our veteran history dating back to the 18th century, reminding us of the sacrifices that have been made for 100's of years to preserve the beliefs of this country.

The music, passage and speeches were touching and appropriate.

Tick Removal (Simple Technique)

Insects breath through their skin. This acts to suffocate them.

Apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball. Cover the tick with the soap-soaked cotton ball and swab it for a few seconds (15-20), the tick will come out on its own and be stuck to the cotton ball when you lift it away.

Petroleum Jelly works the same way I'm told.

Union Township Recreation Area

Max and I bounded down the river bank and startled a large flock of swallowtail butterflies on the shore of the Schuylkill River and I didn't get one shot off.

Hoping that they would return after walking the loop, about 2 miles and an hour later, this time we sneaked up on them for a great set of photos.

The Union Township Recreation Area is a fairly new spot carved out a natural area along the Schuylkill River. It has a boat ramp, high loop trail, and some lowland trails.

The Thun Trail shares part of the loop trail along SR724.

It was about 80 degrees, but the smell of honeysuckles, wild roses, and berry bushes will be my everlasting memory. However, after breathing the pollen for awhile Max and I both started sneezing and continued until we passed through the heavily pollinated area.

Birdsboro Reservoir (Spring Afternoon)

An afternoon photo walk with Max was long overdue and the Hay Creek Watershed was the perfect venue.

It was 74, sunny, and nearly bug-free. The lighting was rich, as you'd expect for about 6 PM.

I parked at the gate on Hay Creek Rd (aka SR82) and we walked about 1 mile to the Birdsboro Reservoir. The lake was calm and reflective. Little swallows were buzzing the surface feeding on the surface flies.

The road's shoulders that were cut back last year are growing back too so I expect to see more macro opportunities this summer and fall.

Throughout our walk we passed mountain bikers, hikers, and fishermen.

Hot Rod Classic Car Show (VF Outlet)

Vanity Fair Outlet (VF) was the setting for the Hot Rod Classic Car Show. About 75 hot rods added color and flair to the mall parking lots.

Onlookers of all demographic backgrounds came out to enjoy the sites. Seems like vintage quality is ageless.

Jenkins Arboretum (Spring)

John, and I met at 8:30 AM for a warm, humid, spring morning photo shoot at Jenkins Arboretum. Lack of a breeze is good for taking macros, but makes you a sitting target for pesky gnats and mosquitoes. We sprayed almost all possible exposed skin with bug repellent, so the bugs annoyingly focused on the ear canal or eyes.

Jenkins Arboretum was splendid. Lots of color from the azaleas and spring wildflowers made for abundant photo subjects. The pond/bog area is great too, but since it's completely fenced in, getting close to the water's edge is not possible.

We hiked nearly the whole 1.2 mile paved trail collecting hundreds of colorful shots. Jenkins labels most trees and plants so identifying the flora is easier.

It's a well thought out place that makes for seasonal, even weekly or monthly visits a different experience. Time of day effects fauna behavior so staggering when you go will afford a variety of sightings.

In April 2009, they opened their LEED certified visitor center. Renewable and "green" in every respect possible, this building is a great example of the latest and practical sustainable architectural design.

Reading Museum Spring Gardens

The Spring blooms probably started a week or two early due to the mild "hot" weather.

As in prior posts, the Reading Public Museum grounds are worthy of a photo walk. The whole Wyomissing Creek trail offers a variety of subject matter too.

Max and I headed out late morning, still about 45 degrees, and our first walk in a long time. He was thrilled by the outing with it's hundreds of new smells to explore.

This was a challenging shoot, for a steady breeze, cold hands and energetic dog were constantly pulling or pushing against my one-handed shooting technique with my new Canon SX20.

Lots of bright light, fast shutter speeds and just enough breaks in the wind allowed me to shoot a number of representative shots.

I bought the Canon in December 2009 and am still getting used to the numerous features and heft of this model. No real complaints, just a new learning curve.

Philadelphia - Winter Photo Walk

A mild (50 degree) winter afternoon was the perfect climate for a leisurely photo walk in Philadelphia.

The route I took was over 3 miles in 3 hours. From Broad St, east on Walnut St to Independence Hall, to Chinatown, to City Hall and back to Broad St.

City walking is really one the most interesting settings I can think of for the subject matter is nearly limitless. Architecture, statues, parks, people, and street scenes to name just a few.

Lighting challenges are present as well due to tall buildings and low sun angles and the early sunsets in winter.

An observation about Starbucks is that I believe that you can't finish a cup of grande before you walk upon another Starbucks.

Max stayed home for this outing, so I had a free hand available to drink coffee.

New Canon
Around Thanksgiving, I replaced my Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28, with the Canon Powershot SX20 IS. A heavier, bigger ultra zoom, I am still learning the features and limits of this model.

This camera has a big grip, feeling more like an DSLR then any other ultra zoom's I've owned. This is the 5th digital I've owned. It's powered by 4AA "rechargeable" batteries, which adds to the heft, but also makes it convenient.

Mossy Log (French Creek State Park)

On one of the first outings since the colorful autumn season, Max and I visited French Creek State Park.

It was a mild fall day, but extremely muddy, a recurring theme this year due to frequent rain.

The two mile lap around the lake takes about an hour when you stop often to take pictures or to decipher the low lying smells.

I believe that the beaver family remained in their same lodge for nowhere was a new one built. Fresh gnawing's and newly downed trees were apparent all along the shore line.

A few people were around, but the park had a lonely feeling as winterizing was nearly complete.

Forest Hills Cemetery at the foot of Neversink Mountain is very picturesque. Not only is the back of the property the access point to the trails of Neversink Mountain, but the grounds offer photo subjects as well.

The pond was covered with fresh leaves. The fountain was creating a slight current making the leaves gradually float around.

Conowingo Dam (Bald Eagle Watch)

On November 6, 2009, we trekked about 70 miles to the Conowingo Dam on the Susquehanna River in MD.

I learned that early November was near prime viewing of the Bald Eagles as they are migrating.

It was a clear cold day, maybe 40 degrees, but felt much colder along the gusty river.

My camera is really no match for the reach of the rigs mounted on the heavy duty tripods. Some of these folks could have bought a small car with their camera and lens investment.

It was a great outing and my goal to see Bald Eagles was more then satisfied.

Initially, it took a little time to find them in the mix of the all the bird activity generated by the water release, but once you recognize their soaring flight pattern and size, they actually stand out.

During the hour or so we visited, an eagle was almost always present. The cold temps and frozen fingers took it's toll and I finally wrapped it up.

Little Falls (Nolde State Forest)

I believe our Nolde State Forest visit was the last fall foliage outing for 2009. Sadly, the leaves were pummeled by rain and wind so their colorful show was short-lived.

Once again another cloudy day actually turned sunny in the last 15 minutes of my visit.

Max and I were on the clock and had to leave by 2:00PM, so it would just be a few highlight like the steam (Watershed Trail), stone walls, Kissinger Road and the Mansion.

By no means is this list complete. Some really excellent and unique trails are the Coffee Pot Hollow Trail, Middle Road, and Laurel Path to name a few. The North Pond and Painted Turtle Pond are great subjects too.

Coincidentally, on this Sunday, the Mansion was offering tours from 1-4P. I would love to take a tour sometime, but didn't think dogs were welcome so I passed. (Their event calendar shows 12/6/09 open house again)

SGL43 (Horseshoe Trail & Mine Run Creek)

One of our final fall outings, Max and I went to the SGL43 in Chester County. With 6o degree temps, heavy overcast and occasional drizzle the notion to stay home had occurred.

Once again, it had been raining for days prior so the trail was muddy, inches deep at spots. Wind dropped most of the leaves too, so tree photography was limited.

In spite of the gray day, it was a productive photo outing, so the moral is don't let gloomy weather deter going for a photo walk.

A short, easy mile walk with a great destination. Subdued lighting makes for neat shadowless effects, but I sound like a broken record shooting in these conditions repeatedly this fall.

Antietam Creek (Perfect Morning)

Early Sunday by 9AM, Max and I were witnessing the peak colors of autumn at the Antietam Reservoir.

Lake reflections were already brilliant while the woods were just starting to catch some sun rays.

Antietam Creek lies in a valley so it gets maybe 4-5 hours of light, based on my experience. It's got rich lighting between 10A and 2P.

I found a really useful website for photographers, called "Solar Rose" which plots the direction of the sunrise and sunset.

We meandered along the Antietam Creek for a couple hours then exited as the sun climbed. We covered only 1.5 miles in total, but that trek has so much fabulous scenery you don't need to venture any further.

Klapperhall Curve Reflection

Before sunset, Max and I headed to Forest Hills Cemetery to hop the Klapperhall Trail to the river.

The Klapperhall Trail joins the Exeter Scenic River Trail, once you go through the tunnel under the railroad tracks.

From the tunnel you can see a path down the bank to a large clearing next to the river. An obvious fishing spot which I think has the best views of Neversink Mountain the Klapperhall curve or the river.

Due to the angle of the sun, there wasn't much lighting on the trails, just the tree tops.

Reading Museum (Fall Photo Walk)

A regular stop on my photo walk calendar, the Reading Public Museum trails are a popular dog walking and people strolling destination.

The colors were good with a range of some trees nearly empty while others just starting their autumn show.

A round trip to Trudy's Garden and back to the parking lot is easy and less then a mile.

If you continue past the garden, the trail goes for miles all the way to the quarry fields and SR724 in Shillington.

Neversink Mountain Preserve (Views of Reading)

A gorgeous, 60 and sunny, evening was the draw for another outing with Max.

The drive to the shoulder parking is likely more challenging then the walk to the "Witches Hat" and "Overlook" with it's multiple 90 degree switchbacks.

"Magic hour" was the perfect time to get rich lighting on Reading.

French Creek State Park (Fall Colors at Scotts Run)

Scotts Run at French Creek State Park always offers some of the best reflections and fall colors around.

It is a must see on my circuit of fall color spots. The cover of my French Creek book features a picture of Scotts Run.

Max and I walked up the shoreline past the dozen or so boats that have yet to be removed for winter. A constant breeze rippled the lake so no mirror-like reflections.

We then walked along the crest of the dam and down the Scotts Run trail. The creek was rushing due to three straight days of rain. Great scenes at every bend. All day the sun was subdued by clouds, but burst out just before sundown.

The muddy, yet colorful trail and stream offered some great subject matter. Ferns (one of my favorites) in various shades of green, yellow and brown are prevalent along the trail.

The trail ends and Max and I loop back on the green blazed Lenape trail.

The view where the trail opens to the lake was amazing. The light was hitting the trees and the breeze was gone completely leaving a mirror of well lit autumn splender.

Schuylkill River (Thun Trail)

Rapidly changing fall colors drew me to the Brentwood Trailhead for a view of the reflections on the Schuylkill River.

The Brentwood Trailhead is part of the Schuylkill River Trail system and is located on SR10 just up the road from Angelica Park.

Birsboro Reservoir (Fall Colors)

Max and I ventured out on an overcast afternoon.

Lighting was waning so I shot most shots with shutter priority setting between 1/30 and 1/60 of a second for trail shots deliberately underexposing them.

I estimate that only 20% of the deciduous trees were in color.

Temps were a fall-like 50, and the round trip walk is about 2 miles.

Blue Marsh Lake (Early Fall Color)

Max and I parked at the parking area where Justa Road ends. Justa Road is just a short distance from the Highland Road and the Old Dry Road Farm where I usually start my walks. The lot has trails going into the surrounding fields or you can follow the gated road towards the lake.

A bunch of riders were unloading their horses from the six or so trailers. We ran into them a couple more times for they covered the same roads as us.

Justa Road meets Sleepy Hollow Road, which runs along a finger of the lake and ends at the ramp. This is my favorite leg of the hike since you can see the lake through the back lit trees. Also, many of the trees were in full color along the lake offering vivid colors to photograph.

A few boats were on the lake, but not the greatest reflections.

I'd estimate that we walked about a 2 miles on a mild and sunny 62 degree day.

Friday, September 26 was the one year anniversary of when I started posting to Google blogger. It's been a fun project and perfect excuse to get off the couch to learn, discover, and enjoy my surroundings. As a result of the blog, I find myself not only composing photos, but words too, as I walk Max on the trails.

I hope you enjoy the photo journal. I do deviate from Berks County and the nature from time-to-time, but I think those subjects are photogenic and interesting too.

Please feel free to make comments. It's like Christmas when I see a Berks Awhile comment notification in my email.

Hopewell Furnace National Park

Continuing my Berks History tour from the Mouns Jones Festival, I made the short drive to the Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site. They were offering free admission celebrating the National Parks system.

I arrived in time to see the demo on furnace operation and watched the three educators make a replica "aluminum" piece from the infamous Hopewell Furnace cast iron stove.

They talked about the history of the area and how its natural resources of limestone, iron ore and hardwood forests are the key ingredients for iron and pig iron.

Skilled iron smiths and apprentices made high quality, durable stoves. The stoves actually were made of ten interlocking pieces which were shipped to purchasers who needed to then assemble.

Hopewell Furnace, similar to Joanna Furnace, was a whole little community dedicated to supporting the men that keep giant furnaces hot enough to smelt iron and manufacture goods.

Mouns Jones Festival

Old Morlatton Village in Douglasville was the site of the annual Mouns Jones County Fair and Harvest Festival.

Period dressed volunteers demonstrated how life might have been almost 300 years. A fundraising auction was on-going while crafters offered their wares and the Boy Scouts were selling home made food.

In the Mouns Jones house, bonnet-wearing women were demonstrating how they used to cook pies over an open fire and bake bread in the bee hive oven.

One of the highlights of the day for me was the Historic Preservation Trust opened up the old George Douglas Mansion for tours. It was very cool seeing and learning about the work-in-progress of rehabbing a piece of history.

You could see the impact of generations of dwellers on the building from additions, to the retrofitted 60+ year old electric wiring and fixtures. Layers, of peeling paint, wallpaper, and various levels of floor coverings uncovered the styles of the past inhabitants.

Middle Creek Wildlife Area (Waterfowl Festival)

Another cool event hosted by Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area is Waterfowl Festival. The talent of the carvers is remarkable. Besides carvers, are a few painters, decoy makers, carver supply dealers, and duck call designers and sellers.

Wildlife Management is a paradox to me. Basically, the land provides an ideal habitat for wildlife to feed, reproduce and flourish so that the "excess" can be hunted.

I'm not opposed to hunters or hunting as a sport. It's fees are the means to preserve the great land masses for both hunters and non-hunters to enjoy. It truly is a balance, a scientific balance too, that seems to be working.

The gardens that were so photogenic a month earlier are waning, but still offered lots of color and bees to photograph. The fields are highlighted with yellow golden rod with lots of browns and greens.

Another great day of weather, capping a weekend of great early fall weather featuring cool 50-degree nights and 75-degree day temp. The broad temp swings and moisture are key elements to vibrant colors of the leaves that is forthcoming.

French Creek State Park (Late Summer, Fall's Coming)

Max and I lapped Hopewell Lake on a perfect late summer night. Temp in the 70's, sunny, and a calm lake was way better then the predicted rain and chilly weather.

The usual muddy spots were present. A few hikers were encountered, but lots of kayakers explored the lake. The beaver(s) recently gnawed chunks out of a big tree and made some very precise tool-like cuts.

Reflections and magic hour lighting are great subjects and plentiful at French Creek.

Hay Creek Festival (One Dry Day)

Hay Creek Festival had one sunny day out of three. The grounds had some muddy patches so they did a great job sopping up them up with coincidentally, hay.

The usual cast of period demonstrations were present with some new ones and a few missing regulars, but overall it seemed bigger and better then ever. I liked the glass blowers, saw mill, iron master store, civil war encampment, antique tractors and cars.

The food is a big draw and dozen's of organizations and 100's of volunteers were cheerfully dishing out their homemade specialties. I happily left with two quarts of wood fired black kettle soups.

Plenty to do for kids too with strategically placed learning stations.

Still a can't miss event. The kid-oriented Apple Festival is coming October 10, 2009, 7A-3P.

Keystone Balloon Festival (Bird In Hand)

I've never been to a balloon festival and always wanted to experience, so when I learned of the Keystone Balloon Festival in Bird in Hand was coming to the area I put it on the calendar.

I presume the scheduled Fri and Sat launches were cancelled due to the rain so when the forecast was decent, I trekked out at 5:30 AM Sunday morning so I could catch the 6:30 sunrise launch.

Too bad the weather probably ruined the full schedule of activities, at least they had one pristine morning for the launch.

Six balloons were launched and I was shocked at the size/volume differences due to the size of the baskets attached. Some baskets could accommodate, what looked like 10 people, other baskets would be crowded with 4 people.

I think the coolest sight was at pre-dawn when they fired up the giant propane flames which illuminated the entire inside of the translucent balloons. Three giant silhouettes turned into back lit logos.

I know that they are safe, but the process firing a foot diameter by 12 foot long propane flame in a thin cloth bag does seem potentially dangerous.

However, I can imagine that the floating sensation over gorgeous Lancaster County farm land trumps the minimal risk.

Shikellamy State Park Marina (Late Summer)

It was a foggy, surreal morning at the Shikellamy State Park. Half the park was shrouded in clouds, the other half was sunny. As Max and I walked around the paved mile trail, the lighting was changing virtually every minute.

The two railroad bridges were fun subjects as the fog, then morning "magic hour" light covered them. Even the butterfly garden was still pumping out color, but it was a little too early for the butterflies.

Tiny spider webs, one in nearly every fence rail opening, were covered with dew and showed that nature is nearly perfect.

Penn State Football (Perfect Day)

Incredible weather prevailed for the pomp and circumstance of the Penn State football home opener. The high scoring 1st half team couldn't find the end zone in the 2nd half and missed on several opportunities, but it was great to be back in the house that JoPa built.

Danielle Boone Homestead (Road side)

On the road to the picnic areas, the shoulder was full of macro activity. Daniel Boone Homestead has a new policy to pay to walk the grounds, but the picnic area is still free I believe.

I looked for milkweed plants for they might offer some caterpillar and insect shots. My search paid off with monarch (striped - eats young leaves) and milkweed tussock caterpillars (spiky - eats old leaves). A third caterpillar was found on a tree leaf, not milkweed.

Three distinct butterflies were present too, monarch, black swallowtail, and a red-spotted purple (sunning on gravel). Sadly, they are showing their age with tattered and faded wings.

Still some colorful thistle and wildflowers are present.

As we were about to leave, Max and I heard musket shots, which could only mean target practice at the range.

Angelica Park (Pre-Fall)

Thinking that the weekend could be a wash-out, I wanted to get back on a trail. Angelica Park had a fall-like feel due to the mild 70 degree temp and the apparent change in colors.

Many of the wildflowers and thistle are now brown and wilting. There are still the late summer flora species present, but nothing near the saturation of color as in July.

One of the highlights was spotting a giant brown spider, at least a 3" diameter is big by my standards. If you shape your thumb and index finger in the shape of a "C", that is the area the spider would fill. Still to be identified, so if anybody knows the species feel free to comment. My first choice is a wood spider, but I am having a hard time finding a pix and conclusive id on the web, pun intended.

Update: the spider is a fishing spider, per the Bug Guide.

Lighting was waning so I was practicing some macro with flash photography. I prefer natural lighting, but fill flash and pure flash lighting can save or make interesting shots.

My absence from Berks Awhile is due to spending five days in Las Vegas, NV where I accumulated a couple thousand pictures, so I'll share a few brief posts on that experience.

Las Vegas (Red Rock Canyon)

The Las Vegas area is rich in Native American history, pop culture, engineering marvels, live entertainment and food, but I think my favorite spot is the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

Red sandstone veins and big hills are visible from the Strip and throughout the desert region. Nature activities abound from horse back riding, biking, hiking and camping.

I was drawn to the "red rocks" and visited three times in five days for it's a new and unique place that offers vast photo opportunities. I caught one morning just right with blue skies, puffy white clouds and mild temps.

The Red Rock Canyon area is nearly 200,000 acres and features 30 miles of hiking trails and a 13 mile scenic drive. For $5 a car, the scenic drive was an economical and an efficient way to see the highlights of the canyon in a short time.

Las Vegas (Neon Museum Boneyard)

Another cool and unique thing to do is take a guided tour of the Neon Museum's "Boneyard". It's the temporary and permanent resting place for discarded lighted and neon signs.

Many iconic signs are being preserved here by the dry desert heat until their turn comes to be restored to their original splendor so they can be put back on display. The plan is to add the signs to the Fremont St collection and also line N. Las Vegas Blvd median.

It was a sunny 104 (sounds like a radio station) when we visited. I'd estimate that two groups of 20 were braving the heat to get a history lesson, take pictures and enjoy the workmanship, design and artistic styles of the colorful old signs.

I wasn't alone in believing that the venue was eye candy and it was a great, stimulating photographic challenge.

Las Vegas (Hoover Dam and Boulder City)

The next stop about 4 miles from the Lake Mead scenic drive was the Hoover Dam. After a cursory security checkpoint, they let the vehicles drive across the dam.

The near side of the dam has paid parking, a restaurant and a visitor center where you can take tours inside the dam itself. The far side has free parking and a side walk leading back across the dam. I took pictures from the free parking area and then headed back. Grab shots from the van were easy due to the line of traffic that paused frequently.

Granted the dam is an engineering phenomenon for the era it was built, the suspension bridge that they were building over the deep gorge is a testament to modern bridge designers. Bridge building conditions are usually extreme, hence the need for the bridges in the first place, but the terrain of sheer cliffs and deep gorges make this construction project quite dangerous and ever challenging. I'm sure that there will be a documentary on this project someday.

Update 10/24/09: The "Big Pour" of the largest concrete suspension bridge in the US (4th in the world) was on rerun today on the Science Discovery channel. Originally aired in 2007 on Mega Builders, the documentary documented many of the obstacles encountered when pouring the foundations and stretching the cable across the gorge.

On the way back to Las Vegas, I stopped in Boulder City where I read that I might get a glimpse of some big horn sheep in a suburban public park. I read on a couple of Vegas blogs that Hemenway Park with kiddie playgrounds and tennis courts had big horn sheep that come down and graze in the mornings.

Las Vegas (Desert and Lake Mead)

I've studied tons of photos of deserts, but never actually visited one. Since my body was still on EST, I easily woke up for sunrise which is when the desert temps are quite tolerable. The temp in the rental van said 80 degrees at 6AM, which felt mild. 105 was going be the high.

I headed east of Las Vegas to the Lake Mead Recreation Area for about 20 minutes. That area is part of the vast Mohave Desert. Lake Mead, which was created by Hoover Dam, looked so unnatural to me. Like a rock with a puddle in it.

The water I typically photograph has vegetation up to the waters edge. Instead of trees, grass, weeds, and mud, the desert shore line is pebbles and rocks with some scrubby bushes and an occasional patch of hardy grass.

I loved the palette of colors that the desert offers, every conceivable shade of brown with patches of red and green, plus the blues of the skies and man-made lakes.

Many places along the drive reminded me of pictures from the moon, just dust, gravel and rocks with no vegetation in site.

Flash flooding is apparent too, for deeply eroded ruts are everywhere the water could flow. The ground is so hard and rocky that water doesn't get absorbed but runs off the surface. Lots of warning signs to avoid gorges if rain is forecast.

The Drive to/from French Creek

I try to remember that the path to the destination should not be overlooked. Here are a few shots of stops I made to and from French Creek. I take different routes into the park for variety.

French Creek State Park (Sunrise)

Mornings in the woods are a special time. Knowing that you, and possibly only a few others, are experiencing the same unique sights, sounds, and smells can't help but make you feel privileged. I get the same feeling when I walk the beach at sunrise.

A couple fishermen were the only fans of this morning. A good fog blanketed the area which makes for dramatic lighting when the sun starts to climb.

I really like Scotts Run in the morning for the lake is usually smooth, with mist rising. and a line of diverse colorful boats tied off. Most of the boats were nearly touching the bottom for they has retained gallons of rain water from our wet week.

Max and I briefly walked the shore line, but then headed down the trail along the stream. The woods were lush, green and dripping with dew. The trail was puddled and soft at spots due to all the rain.

For the many times I've taken this trail and detailed the challenges of shooting in the low and contrasty light, I keep trying. Even if no shots come out, I still have the experience of being surrounded by green in a rain forest like setting.

Goggleworks (Open House)

On the 2nd Sunday of the month, Goggleworks offers and open house for the public to visit and sample the "coolness" that they are creating.

Many artists open their galleries for personal tours and candid Q&A sessions. Cafe and gift shop were open and buzzing too. Today the musicians were a combo of a saxophonist and pianist.

Middle Creek Wildlife Area (Extraordinary Art and Gardens)

The visitor center at the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area has one of the best gardens around. Perfectly choreographed by height and color, it exemplifies how to make a great garden.

Coincidentally, the garden is at it's prime at the same time of year as their Wildlife Art Show affording the visitors a double dose of inspiration.

The talent of the painters is truly apparent. Some of the artists paint so realistically that you need to step up close to the painting to confirm that it's a painting.

The wildflower field just below the visitor center also offered abundant flowers and insect photo subjects. Interesting, in the spring, the field was intentionally burned which seemed to have no negative impact on the flourishing plant life.

The crisp lighting made the colors pop offering endless photo subjects and compositions. Some of the pix in this post are tightly cropped to see the intricate detail of the flowers and insects.

Another must see is the upcoming Wildfowl Show coming up September 19 & 20. Fabulous decoy carvers, painters, duck callers, and hunting vendors will be present.

Birdsboro Reservoir (Afternoon Photo Walk)

Max and I spent a warm and sunny afternoon walking to the Birdsboro Reservoir. A few cars were parked at the SR82 dead end, which was more then I expected. Usually afternoons are really quiet.

Blue skies and puffy white clouds made picturesque landscapes. A steady breeze left ripples on the reservoir for dramatic reflections.

The shoulder along old SR82 was uneventful for most of the habitat and food for insects was mowed down last month. One Yellow Swallowtail butterfly was around, but not the dozens I expected. I only saw a couple milkweed plants too, not nearly the numbers that I remember. It will surely grow back, but might take a year or two.

I still enjoyed the outing even though the macro-world was lacking.

Jenkins Arboretum (Macro Paradise!)

In May, Jenkins Arboretum was exploding with colorful Rhododendrons and Azaleas. During the summer season, there is less color, but still plenty to photograph. Macro photography for flowers and insects was the main activity.

I met my friend John for an afternoon of shooting. Conditions were hot and humid and nearly no breezes. Actually a breeze or two felt good, but they can temporarily ruin a tight macro scene.

The pond was literally buzzing with activity too. Varieties of bees and dragonflies were abundant. A little green heron caught and swallowed a fish right in front of me.

Nolde Forest (Early Summer Morning)

A couple reasons to get out in the mornings are for the fabulous hazy back lighting and it's a bit cooler before the oppressive heat and humidity arrive.

Max and I were some of the first ones at the Saw Mill Parking along SR625. This is the only place to park along SR625 for the main road was gated, as usual in the early AM.

We headed out along the Angelica Creek to the North Pond. Morning reflections were rich on the pond. Nolde is popular with joggers for we saw about a dozen trail runners.

Back-tracking along the creek we walked the paved road then ducked into the woods where a set of stone steps leads up a steep unmarked trail to the mansion.

The mansion is a cool old building with a small garden and pond. An impressive display of stone-work, the old mansion is truly a landmark to be preserved.

Chestnut Tree Trail was the next route for I wanted to visit the Painted Turtle Pond too. The wildflower collection and pond creatures are the draw and did not disappoint.

After about two hours of exploration, we headed out. Probably about 2 miles of trails were covered.

Off of Geigertown Road just outside of French Creek State Park is an amazing garden. Probably 50 feet or more, this colorful bonanza, was planted on a bank in lieu of cutting grass I suppose. Thank You!

French Creek State Park (Dragonfly Season)

A visit to Scott's Run Lake at French Creek State Park was the destination on a warm humid summer afternoon. Scott's Run was calm with just a couple boats and shore fishermen.

Dragonflies were buzzing everywhere. It must be mating season for many were flying in tandem and connected. There are so many varieties of them too. Most common are little fluorescent blue, a few big green, blue-green, double-banded wings, brown, and even reddish ones were spotted.

Max and I explored the heavily grown-up North shore first where the dragonflies dominated, then crossed the dam and traveled the South shore line and woods trails for some scenic pix.

The paths were not very muddy until the seeps and wetland spots were encountered. As usual, F.C.S.P. is always a fulfilling outing.

Joanna Furnace (Breakfast and Garden)

When not hosting great festivals, the Hay Creek Valley Historical Society offers a breakfast buffet on the third Saturday of the month.

The breakfast is a fairly new offering and deservedly gets a pretty good turnout. They have complimented the breakfast with flea markets, art shows, furnace demonstrations or other educational tours.

These morning events offer an opportunity to tour the grounds without the big crowds. I was particularly interested in the typical 19th century garden with herbs and flowers.

A couple classic cars flaunted their lines in the parking lot too.

Angelica Creek Trails (Replayed)

About 9 days ago, I paid a visit to Angelica Creek. I saw it's huge potential, so I was inspired to go back and try to capture it.

More wildflowers, dozens of finches and other thistle eaters. Some huge frogs at the pond (they evaded my lens). 75 and breezy when we arrived turned into about 72 and calm near dusk at 8PM.

Max & I did the trails near the creek but then headed about 0.5 miles under SR10 down to the Schuylkill River for some nice lighting on the calm waterway.

Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts

Two "must-see" events at State College (aka Penn State) include the Arts Festival and football games. In July many thousand alums, families, and art fans congregate and reunite for a long weekend of fun on the streets of State College and Penn State Campus.

Heister Street was closed for street chalk painting. Allen Street had a band stand, and water activities for kids. Sand sculptures. Food vendors, albeit overpriced, lined the street too.

Tents for photographer's, painters, jewelers, plus glass and wood workers meandered for about of mile. To my delight, a high concentration of photographer's showed off their various destinations and print processing techniques.

Penn State has added some great buildings over the past 10 years. Possibly my favorite new one is the Information Technology Sciences building, a curving, soft "S" shape straddles Atherton St.

Finishing off the morning was a delicious lunch at the Indian Cuisine restaurant on Calder Way.

Pagoda and Mt. Penn Sunset

Angelica Creek Trails

Angelica Creek Park has a field-like appearance from SR10, but up close it is brimming with activity. A warm, breezy and bright 80 degree afternoon brought Max and I out for a memorable walk in the sun.

Maybe a half mile or so of trails run along the former lake bed on both sides of Angelica Creek. The planners who designed the park did a nice job with the wildflower selection. Not only is it colorful, but serves the purpose of providing a food source for so many song birds.

The thistle (popular ingredient in finch food mixes) bushes were plentiful and dozens of gold finches were feasting. I was fortunate to get to watch these little birds pull out the thistle seeds in a natural setting.

This place has unlimited potential and has started off in the right direction in my opinion. In the years ahead, as the fields and wetlands mature, pathways improve, and trees grow up it will have an even greater look and appeal.

Philadelphia Independence Weekend

Philadelphia can really throw a festival! The Independence Day weekend had numerous activities from Penn's Landing to the Independence Center to the Art Museum.

AYCE Ice Cream party at Penn's Landing drew thousands. An outdoor living history set-up with several dozen tents and even more period dressed educators was kid-friendly and informative.

If you stick around for dusk and sunset you'll be treated to a free Pops concert, Sheryl Crow on the BF Parkway and then watch fireworks shot off over the Art Museum.

I never did the Duck Boat tours and the weather was predicted to be perfect. The tour lasts over an hour and our driver, Jake, was a real comedian. Quackers were handed out to everyone to deliver insults "quacks" to unsuspecting, yet deserving pedestrians. Splash down into the Delaware River was thrilling and the views unique. The total experience was a blast and totally recommended.

We found parking in the garage of the Hyatt (Penn's Landing) for $13 for 6 hours, $19 for longer. Not too bad for that part of the city.

Dave and Busters was the happy ending to the day. It wasn't that busy for I think everyone was eating alfresco at the 200+ cafes around the city. Ironically, outdoor dining was illegal until Ed Rendell repealed the law in 1995.

Antietam Lake (Awesome AM!)

Max and I headed out for a mild weather retreat to the Antietam Lake and falls. We parked at the same spot off Angora Rd.

By walking along the road, over the little bridge, you can get to the road along the lake. Stream crossings are another option, but it was running a little too deep for my boots.

Waterproof high top boots are essential gear for many of the photo walks in this journal. Many times the mud goes up to the ankles and would clearly suck a shoe-type hiker right off your foot. I even had it past the tops of the boots just once.

The truck wide road along the lake turns into a foot path near the dam. Once you get above the dam, the spring and trail become one for about 30 feet of soupy, wet mud and rocks.

The knobby tread of the boot fills up with mud, making rock hopping slippery, but it would be down right treacherous without good treads.

Overcast skies once again make the lighting tricky, but colors fully saturated. With poor light and without a tripod, improvising by using stumps and boulders is routine.

We followed the trail all the way to the Seidel Rd about .75 miles from the parking.

Hay Creek Watershed (Birdsboro Reservoir)

Another beautiful night for a walk (73 & sunny). By 6:30 along the old SR82, the road is completely shaded by the mountain and trees so photo ops were limited.

A secondary reason why there were few macro subjects was because the shoulders were mowed back about 4 feet. This was prime insect habitat or weeds depending on your perspective.

The Birdsboro Reservoir was calm and near mirror-like reflections were at every angle. Lighting is always tricky around the lake, for the skies are so much brighter then the trees causing high contrast situations.

Reading Public Museum and West Reading

Nursing a sore ankle, so I thought an "urban" environment would be less stressful then hopping rocks, and hurdling logs.

Well, have you seen what happens to the sidewalks in mature neighborhoods in West Reading? A small consequence of big, old, beautiful mature trees is invasive root systems that skew most sidewalk slabs within three feet of the trunk. I pictured bikes, Big Wheels and strollers vigorously bouncing over the uneven pavements.

Keeping one eye on the ground and another for photo ops, I made it (with Max of course) to the Museum where the trails are paved and wide.

As I shared in prior posts, the grounds next to Parkside Road North are so impressive. The early Spring collection of flowers gave way to the early Summer collection of colorful Lillies and other species.

French Creek State Park (Green Afternoon)

Max and I spent a great warm evening (70's) at French Creek. Great lighting, lots of people, some muddy spots, but minimal bugs made it a great outing.

We lapped Hopewell Lake (~2 miles), muddy in the usual seep areas, but overall pretty dry. The lake was filled with kayaks, canoes and fishing boats.

"TD Bank" Pro Cycling Race in Philadelphia

For many years, my favorite summer kick-off events is to go to the International Professional Cycling Championship. Philadelphia has been hosting the race for 25 years the first weekend in June. It was nearly lost this year, but the tour secured some last minute funding.

The course runs 156 miles, which is 10 laps from the Art Museum to Manayunk and back. Between 5-6 hours in a bike saddle is a pure endurance test. Women also race in the "Liberty Classic", a shorter 100 miles course, but with the same lap distance.

Near the Art Museum, the "feed zone" and vendor area are constantly buzzing with activity and are just steps from grand stands and great views of the sprint to the finish line. I always load up on free samples of nutritional products, sports drinks, and local interest giveaways.

Also across from and on the steps of the Art Museum is the VIP/main sponsor activity area. Dancing mascots, face painting, water ice, cow bells, back bags, rock climbing, crafts, all free, just to name a few things TD Bank shared.

I haven't been to the Manayunk leg of the race in years, but they open their arms and bottles for the day and make it a huge neighborhood party.

I can't remember the event ever being rained out. The weather is usually perfect too, making the day out in Philly even more memorable.
