Gruber Wagon Works - Berks Heritage Center

The Berks Heritage Festival was the reason to get out on a beautiful fall day.

A beautiful venue along the Tulpehocken Creek was the back drop for numerous crafters, food, entertainment, historians and tours of the Canal Building and Gruber Wagon Works.

Free admission with a $5 parking donation was the entrance fee.

Hot Peppers - Bowers Chile Pepper Festival

A really cool and wildly popular event occurs in early September in the park in the little town of Bowers.

Easily 50 vendors booths with the common theme of chile peppers offer their unique products. The originality and amazing flazors to sample (and purchase) make this a very memorable event.

The subtle heat of chile peppers recipes is truly enjoyable while the uncomfortably hot peppers are rare and clearly marked for the more adverntuous.

Wings and Wheels - Golden Age Air Museum

I believe the sweltering hot weekend hurt the attendance of this unique and fun event.

WW reenactors had encampments. Classic cars showed up and many bi-planes flew in for the festival.

Probably 30 plus airplanes, many quite old, parked on the field for close inspection and some were available for rides.

Food trucks and live entertainment were also available for enjoyment.

Located in Bethel PA, the Golden Age Air Museum had some wonderful airplane models and a few outdoor hangers had fullsize planes being reconditioned.

Ring Toss at Community Days - Shillington

A hugely popular mid-summer event at the Governor Mifflin school campus, this carnival has something for everyone.

There is a quarter mile midway with the typical games as barkers try to lure the spectators with promises of grand prizes.

Rows of food carts are wildly popular with trendy food choices as well as the countless fair food staples.

A variety of high priced rides avail for all ages.

Fleetwood Car Show

One of the numerous rows of exquisite cars.

1933 Chrysler - Fleetwood Car Show

Fleetwood Car Show had a great turnout of the numerous classic and custom cars in the county.

Good food and entertainment met all the needs of the spectators and car owners.

A donation to the fire dept was admission and seemed more than fair.

Kutztown Folk Festival - Farmall

In its 65th year, the Kutztown Folk Festival is the folklife festival in America.

Celebrating the Pennsylvania Dutch (aka German) Culture, it attracts 150,000 visitors a year.

Wonderful German cuisine and skilled crafters line fairgrounds. Rides, live entertainment, animals, games and shopping offer something for everyone.

A garden oasis behind the Curious Consignment is loaded with interesting knick-knacks and beautiful flowers.

Street Performers - Art on the Avenue

Most of Penn Ave. in West Reading was the venue for the 19th Art of the Avenue festival.
A much larger presence of artists and the street performers made this event bigger and better than ever.

Joanna Furnace - Antique Car Show

Many enjoyable events are scheduled at Joanna Furnace by the Hay Creek Valley Historical Association.

A hearty breakfast buffet kicks off a day full of activities. After breakfast a flea market and car show fill your day.

International Truck Wheels, Lyons Car Show

Lyons Cars Show is the first car show I attended this year. Parking donation was the nominal cost of entry.

A nice range of model years were represented, from antique cars, race cars, hot rods, and customs.

This curvy black International truck was reflecting the orange muscle car.

Attractions include a Chinese auction, 50/50 drawing, flea market, plus good food and homemade desserts added a tasty treat.

Craftsman at Work

Christmas at Joanna is a wonderful family oriented celebrating old time Christmas traditions.

Inviting you into the venue is hundreds, many thousands of luminaries that guide your way through the grounds.

Delicious food and unique shops satisfy your appetite and shopping curiosity.

A huge HOT bonfire which is the center piece for the Belsnickel story and carolers.

A hayride, demos in wood/craft shop, a light maze add more fun and tradition to a night at Joanna.

Morgantown Rainbow

Perfect climate conditions formed this perfect rainbow and faint double. The positioning was so fortunate that I could see both ends touching down to the ground.

Chevy Bel Air - St Johns Car Show

I believe this was the 3rd year for the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church classic car show. This show has such diversity in the type of cars present. Probably spanning 100 model years, from Ford Model T's to late model Corvettes and Mustangs this should be interesting to many.

The grove where it's held is probably perfect, with plenty of shady places as well as open fields depending on your exhibiting preference. By the way, the food, starting with the pig roast is great and nearly all the desserts are home made.

This orange and white Chevy Bel Air might be one of my favorite cars. While chatting with the older gentlemen owner, we discuss the cars features and authenticity of the restoration. Coincidentally, there is the same color coupe 1200 miles away staged in front of the I Paparazzi Ristorante in South Beach Miami.

Best paint job - Classic Car Show

Best paint job, originally uploaded by Berks_Awhile.
St. John's Church in Gibraltar, PA hosted a great car show showing about 150 classic cars from all era's.

A colorful and diverse collection of cars were brought out by their owners.

The tree-lined grounds, I thought were the perfect setting to view cars. Another scorching day in July, the trees kept the visitors cooler and encouraged longer visitation.

The owners probably had mixed emotions, enjoying the shade to sit in, but not the clean-up that comes with overhanging trees.

A pig roast, which never disappoints, and numerous home made treats made the food choices plentiful and tasty.

Their goal was 150 cars, which I believe they easily achieved.

SR82 - Geigertown

along SR82 - Geigertown, originally uploaded by Berks_Awhile.
Berks County has a lot of nice farm scenes.

I pass this location regularly at all different times of day and seasons, and I'm pretty sure that I have enough shots to make a four seasons project.

Reading Railroad Heritage Museum

5513 engine, originally uploaded by Berks_Awhile.

Following the memorable Hamburg Hamburger Festival, I passed the Reading Railroad Heritage Museum which was advertising later hours and yard tours for $5.

The museum has knowledgeable volunteers leading yard tours on the weekends; five on Saturdays and three on Sundays.

They have ambitious engine and train car restoration projects, plus the whole site design and landscaping.

I have a passive interest in trains, but the volunteers were so into the history, massive machines, and railroad culture that it was easy to share their enthusiasm about trains.

Union Township Recreation Area

Swallowtail Flock, originally uploaded by Berks_Awhile.

Max and I bounded down the river bank and startled a large flock of swallowtail butterflies on the shore of the Schuylkill River and I didn't get one shot off.

Hoping that they would return after walking the loop, about 2 miles and an hour later, this time we sneaked up on them for a great set of photos.

The Union Township Recreation Area is a fairly new spot carved out a natural area along the Schuylkill River. It has a boat ramp, high loop trail, and some lowland trails.

The Thun Trail shares part of the loop trail along SR724.

It was about 80 degrees, but the smell of honeysuckles, wild roses, and berry bushes will be my everlasting memory. However, after breathing the pollen for awhile Max and I both started sneezing and continued until we passed through the heavily pollinated area.

Fall Colors Commence

Mums have a perfect shape and come in vibrant colors. Also, while walking Max I saw a row of conifers' needles dying off.

Mouns Jones Festival

Old Morlatton Village in Douglasville was the site of the annual Mouns Jones County Fair and Harvest Festival.

Period dressed volunteers demonstrated how life might have been almost 300 years. A fundraising auction was on-going while crafters offered their wares and the Boy Scouts were selling home made food.

In the Mouns Jones house, bonnet-wearing women were demonstrating how they used to cook pies over an open fire and bake bread in the bee hive oven.

One of the highlights of the day for me was the Historic Preservation Trust opened up the old George Douglas Mansion for tours. It was very cool seeing and learning about the work-in-progress of rehabbing a piece of history.

You could see the impact of generations of dwellers on the building from additions, to the retrofitted 60+ year old electric wiring and fixtures. Layers, of peeling paint, wallpaper, and various levels of floor coverings uncovered the styles of the past inhabitants.
